So I've got a three-year-old son who gathers around the TV every Tuesday night with his three older sisters and me. We watch, you got it, American Idol. Boy knows every contestant and judge name. He dances when contestants are doing well and groans when they're not. Boy has become a music connoisseur. Fer sure.
When I ride with Boy in the mini-van now (a blue Toyota Sienna, if you're nosy), he dictates music selection. So I turn on the radio and if it's someone like Neil Simon or Barry Manilow, Boy demands I change the station IMMEDIATELY. But if it's "Peeenk" or "Cawwie Underwood" or "Taywor Swift," I must not only keep my fingers off the dial, I must cease all talking. But the really amazing thing, the part of this story which has to do with writing, is that Boy can recognize these singers in two notes. Two notes. Because Peeenk and Cawwie and Taywor each have a great, distinctive voice. So there you go.

It's especially cool when it's an artist you know they are familiar with, but a song they are hearing for the first time.
When my son was 3 or 4, we stopped for lunch at a Subway in West Virginia while driving to vacation in Hilton Head.
"Is that Peter Gabriel?" He asked. I stopped to listen.
"Yes, that song is called 'Big Time,'" I told him. That's not one we listen to regularly, I was really impressed he picked it up.
Perhaps your son could offer a workshop on creating a distinctive voice.
Yay for Boy for being an avid music lover already!
My two-year-old also like Pink and Taylor Swift.
That is truly incredible! Have you ever had Boy tested for musicality?
And what's also amazing is...did I read right? Have you got FOUR kids (Boy & his 3 sisters)?? Where do you find time for everything you do???
RICK: I love the Peter Gabriel example...kids can be so impressive.
BIG PLAIN V: My son will some day be the King of workshops...all those people do exactly as he wishes, heaven for him.
KELLY: I will have to show him your video, so he can pick up some new moves!
PMM: Have you not seen the zillion nagging emails I've sent you?!
ANN: Yes, Boy has three servants, I mean sisters. I have no idea how I find the time. Sometimes I fall into bed and think, "Did that day just happen?" I'm so glad to see your smiling face back everywhere again!
My eight-year-old made me watch Pink on some music award show, then proceeded to tell me how hot she was. I asked him what "hot" meant. He had no idea.
Talk about dodging your proverbial bullet...
And my three-year-old prefers rap. Sweet.
Amazing what talents these kids have! I wonder if I could do the same thing with my favorite artists....
You conjured up a memory of my grandma telling me she could be on any street in the world and hear me play the piano and know it was me. Music floating in the air, words shuffled on paper. Voice. What a delightful thought to fall into bed with, that how we craft our art makes us recognizable to those who love what we do. Hug that kid for me.
Anita, what a fun post. My two-year-old and six-year-old love music, too. My six-year-old, like me, is a lyric fanatic. We can remember words from all sorts of songs we haven't heard in awhile or have only heard once. But I think with all our brain power going to that, it's easier for us to forget other things :D
