I once read that the difference between the fantasy and science fiction genres is that fantasy can't happen and science fiction just hasn't happened yet. So, my sci fi has aliens (cue eerie music). Do you think there are really aliens out there? Feel free to post anonymously.

I guess with so many solar systems out there it could be possible, but I'm leaning more towards no.
I do believe that your sci fi alien book will be awesome though! :)
I believe there are aliens out there. Knowing what we do of the size of the universe, and the undeniable fact that within it life has been generated at least once (here), the chance that life on earth is a singular occurrence in this vast universe seems unlikely.
Whether or not aliens have been here is another story...
I think it's a certainty that intelligent extraterrestrial life exists elsewhere in the galaxy. (not to mention the trillions of other galaxies)
Has any species ever visited Earth? I doubt it.
Now that I've read the comments, I could've said... "What Rick said!"
Hmmm? I guess I'm a non-believer - in that anyway.
With all the galaxies and stars in the universe, it is very likely that there are other planets where life has evolved in some way. There will probably be planets with life in an early phase (like the earth a billion years ago) and planets where life is extinct (like it will be on earth in the end). However, the distance to other planets will be too large for any communication to take place (the closest star Alpha Centauri is 4 light years away). There is no way whatsoever that anything can travel faster than the speed of light (that's a law of physics), and it would take an infinite amount of energy to bring something with non-zero mass up to that speed.
I do not believe in aliens that travel to the Earth in spaceships and leave crop circles behind. That would be a very awkward form of communication, taken into account the efforts it would take to get here >:)
Cold As Heaven
KELLY: I would've guessed you for a yes...you still surprise me even after all our months (or, is it YEARS?!) together in blogland.
RICK: I'm sure if they had been here, I would've met them...that's just how my life goes. And if they do come around, I'll probably blog about it...maybe even have a camera handy. I'm totally with you on this...the universe is too big for us to be the only ones. Probably. I think.
CHARLIE: There are many times that I've wanted to say, "What Rick said." Have you been to his blog? Good stuff there.
TINA: Interesting that the two women commenting are leaning the same way...perhaps will get more commenters and see if this trend continues.
COLD: That travelling thing got me when I was writing my book. I eventually came up with a method to travel (in my imagination), and I'll be happy to share it with everyone if my book sells. :) I wonder, if I were an alien who was going to "land" on Earth and I could choose the location, which place would it be??? Hmmm...
I'm down with aliens, especially the sigourney weaver movie.
I have to agree with Jodie Foster's character in contact, you know: "I'll tell you one thing about the universe, though. The universe is a pretty big place. It's bigger than anything anyone has ever dreamed of before. So if it's just us... seems like an awful waste of space. Right?"
The aliens in my MG novel are stars. So the work is firmly fantasy. Couldn't happen. :)
Awww, man! Everyone's taken the best lines already.
Put me down for one "yes." Because Spock is still cool after all these years.
And, no, I only watched the re-runs, thank you very much!!
Yes, travelling in imagination is a nice way to circumvent the laws of physics, for sure.
If you were an alien and landed here in the north, I would hope that they gave you a warm alien-fit coat. It's damn cold here now. Dark and cold ... and very nice with the northern light we had tonight >:)
Cold As Heaven
I am a no, when it comes to aliens. The idea of them doesn't excite me or creep me out, yet.
Interesting difference in the definition between fantasy and sci-fi. I've learnt something new.
Like Cold I don't believe in little green men from Mars.
I do, however, believe that there are some mysteries in this world that defy the laws of physics with no rational explanation. Perhaps that's why I prefer fantasy to sci-fi.

PS Doesn't mean I can't admire good sci-fi (like your YA), just that I can "lose" myself more easily in a fantasy world rather than a sci-fi one. I also get more scared when reading sci-fi.

I'm with Cold as Heaven. I think something is likely out there, but don't believe in the Hollywood hype.
I'm baaack :)
I missed you too Ms Anita Laydon Miller.
Yes.
HEATHER: I love the "awful waste of space" quote...I think that's what gets me...like, really, we're it??? But I respect your POV. :)
DARBY: I used to get so sick of STAR TREK on TV when I was a kid, but that newish movie was good, fun.
JUDY: Good point about sci fi feeling scarier...when one thinks "it's possible," it does become scarier.
LITTLE MS J: Yeah, lots of things Hollywood doesn't get right, right? Look at all the really bad plastic surgery, for example. But, hey, did you see Cher on the cover of PARADE last Sunday? That was some good surgery. Probably got it done out of state.
OCEAN GIRL: You have such an interesting, serene perspective on things...you get me centered...I wish you lived down the street! Which reminds me, the house next door is for sale...
MG: Good.
